Experience the Middle Ages in Břevnov Monastery

On the 25th of May 2019, Břevnov Monastery, the most important ecclesiastical centre of its time, will hold 'Středověké slavnosti' (a Medieval Festival) for the sixth time. As usual, visitors can look forward to a varied programme for all age groups.

The first male Benedictine monastery in Bohemia was founded by Prague bishop Vojtěch and Czech Prince Boleslav II in the year 993, during the Middle Ages, the period of European history between antiquity and modernity. According to legend, the name of the monastery comes from the crossbar (‘břevno’ in Czech) in the well where Boleslav and Vojtěch met. You can go back to experience this period for a while thanks to the Medieval Festival, which is organised every year by the historical fencing group Allgor. Visitors can look forward to a rich and entertaining programme.

The Noble Art of Hunting

In addition to popular activities such as the fencing performance, the Royal Knight Tournament, and the show for guide dogs, ‘Pomocné tlapky’; the castle huntsman’s arrival on horseback to the courtyard will be this year’s novelty. He will demonstrate a falconry show, called the Noble Art of Hunting, to the audience.

Brewery

In the Middle Ages, beer was commonly drank, and each noble family had its own brewery and also brewed beer for the house’s servants. This year you can look forward to the monastery brewery’s medieval beer brewing once again. You can not only see the brewing process, but also an interesting demonstration of the sealing of brewing barrels with resin.

Market

The medieval market is a must-see at such an event. In addition to the local beer, food lovers will be attracted by various kinds of sausages and meats, and you can also try traditional spit cake ‘trdelník’ and delicious homemade cakes, lemonade and mead. There will also be period jewellery, leather products, wooden weapons and various accessories on offer.

For kids

The youngest visitors to the Medieval Festival can look forward to the puppet theatre, knight training, or ‘Verbováníčko’ for boys and girls, face painting and various interactive games.

Břevnov Monastery

The monastery has been the home of the Benedictine monastic community since the very beginning. The monastery as a whole, along with the St. Margaret Basilica and the Margaret Garden, is protected as a national cultural monument in the Czech Republic. The monastery is considered to be the oldest documented place where beer was brewed in the Czech Republic. The Břevnov Monastery Brewery continues this tradition.
