Every year, Prague receives 223 times more rainwater than the volume of the Hostivař Reservoir! Yet Prague’s parks and streets are parched.
PRAGUE AS A GIANT SPONGE
When a summer storm hits Prague, up to 66 litres of water per square metre can fall in just one hour!
Our most precious resource runs off, often clogging the sewer system along the way.
We are working to capture that water and use it smartly.
We will save one third of the drinking water used to irrigate Prague’s parks by switching to rainwater.
Evaporation from the captured water will naturally cool the city.
Prague’s groundwater reserves will be replenished.
INVESTING IN WATER SOLUTIONS
A pond on Letná is already awash. The Rokytka River has been freed from its concrete channels and a giant underground reservoir is being built beneath Wenceslas Square so water doesn’t run off the surface and can instead be used to irrigate trees in the Czech Republic’s most famous square. From summer 2026, residents will also be able to apply for grants from Prague City Hall to support rainwater retention.
