PRESS RELEASE: The City of Prague funds the restoration of monuments

The City of Prague assigned in 2004 a total of 60 million Czech crowns in grants to owners of properties of cultural monuments and buildings significant from the standpoint of preservation, located in the Prague preservation reserve. One of the many buildings that received a financial grant for its restoration, was the Art Nouveau apartment building “U Kapínů”.

The building U Kapínů was built in 1905-1906 according to the design of the builder and owner of the house Jan Petrák. Its valuable artistic decoration of stucco and painting is richly decorated with forged Art Nouveau elements of the grating of the balcony among others. All the parts of the building were in a very bad condition.

This house is located at No. 13 Gorazdová street, in the area of the heritage site reserve of the City of Prague. The Prague heritage site reserve was established by government ruling No. 66/1971 Coll., on preservation of monuments in the City of Prague, and in 1992 was added to the UNESCO list of world cultural and natural heritage.

The City of Prague provided the owners of the house “U Kapínů” a grant to the amount of 3,000,000.00 Czech crowns for the restoration and repair of the street facade. The owners also received financial resources for the building and restoration work “primarily for the restoration of painting and stucco decorations on the facade and the blacksmiths and locksmiths work. All of the work carried out was done in accordance with the binding positions set up by the Culture, Monument Care and Tourism Department of Prague City Council according to stipulations of Article 14 paragraph 3 Act 20/1987 Coll., on state preservation, as amended. Expert employees of the Culture, Monument Care and Tourism Department monitored the work as it was being completed. There was a study taken of the original colour of the facade and the individual forged elements. There was a restoration of the facade to its original appearance.

The City of Prague provided financial assistance for the building and restoration work, which directly relates to maintaining and restoring the historical value and essence of the property of the cultural monument and the other buildings. The provision of grants can only be given to the owners of the properties, or in some cases to all the co-owners of a property. In 2004 the City of Prague financially contributed to a total of 67 projects. Among these were various types of building work. The restoration of a number of buildings was completed over the course of the year. Such projects are for example the restoration of the marble tiles  or the restoration of the roof timbers and roofing of building .

The City of Prague provides each year an average of 50 million Czech crowns in grants for the reconstruction of monuments. In the last ten years this financial contribution to grants totalled 0.5 billion Czech crowns.
