Opening: Čestmír Suška — Michal Škoda „Mental Space, Mental Landscape“
On 1 July 2022, the Czech Republic will take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The first of a series of events prepared by Prague House for this important period was the opening of the exhibition "Mental Space, Mental Landscape", which was created in cooperation with the Prague City Gallery. The exhibition combines the work of Čestmir Suška and Michal Škoda, who share many common themes based on interaction with space.
The curator of the exhibition, Magdalena Juříková, introduced the artists at the beginning of the evening by saying: "The exhibition brings together two artists who work with abstract form, but there is a story behind it. It is the essence of many sensations and experiences - the artists feel the need to express them in a concentrated or rather essential form through their work..."
Michal Škoda (*1962) works with maximally reduced shapes that hybridly expand in space and thus do not resemble classical stereometric formations, but rather boxes with indeterminate content. In addition, he is intensively concerned with drawing, which is a surface expression of spatial layouts observed in objects. Along with minimalist morphology, an important expressive component of his works is the use of black monochrome or simple contrast of black and white. His drawings are also about conveying the time and energy he invests in the contemplative process of pencil and graphite surfaces.
Čestmír Suška (*1952) is a sculptor by training, but he also works in many other genres. In the past, these were mainly performance and site-specific works. Drawing is a completely unique form of expression for him and is certainly not a precursor to his sculptures and sculptures. Thematically, however, he stays on similar planes. As in his sculptural work, he seeks out various inspirational techniques and materials, for example, he lets a composition of details cut from tank shells to wilt on paper, resulting in a rust drawing. In drawing, as in sculpture, he seeks to express his relationship to space as a universe and to the spiritual atmosphere of which he is an active co-creator.
The opening was accompanied by DJ Swimlanes.
