Dragana Živanović, the graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (studio of Jiří Sopko), prepared for the project START-UP of the City Gallery Prague a new exhibition Arte et marte that addresses the virile ideals of beauty and power.
The figural pregnant portrayal of bodybuilders or a group of galloping horses on the background of differently stylized scenic background could look as trouble free and calming at the first sight. In fact they are impugning and subversive. The juggling and irony of well-established schemes eventuate in more levels. The relation to the phenomenon of painting and to intentional citations of painting imagery of the history of fine arts is evident. In the figures of bodybuilders turned back and looking into the idyllic landscape we can see the paraphrase of famous pictures of romantic painting of the 19th century (Caspar David Fridrich, Sanford Robinson Gifford) as well as a direct allusion to a famous pop art muscle-man Richard Hamilton.
A peculiar type of subversion is also the fact that the visually effective scenes of Dragana Živanović look pictorially, but from the formal point of view they are relief - the author uses her own technique of painting on the padded canvases with an undercoat.
