Czech Police Museum to host Festival of Swords

'Katana Masuri 2020', the Festival of Swords or 'Slavnost mečů' in Czech, takes place in the Czech Police Museum once every three years. This year's fifth festival will take place on the 6th of September and will once again introduce not only the Japanese sword, but also Japanese culture to the public. The event covers a wide range of topics, from Europe to Asia, from the historical Middle Ages to fencing today.

Cold weapon

The main theme will be the Japanese sword, which will be presented in all its functions and contexts - cultural, historical, spiritual; and not only as a cold weapon, but also as a craft and sport.

Interesting programme

The festival programme will offer demonstrations in using swords, themed walks, interesting workshops, a sword exhibition, and a great accompanying program.

The best sportspeople in the Czech Republic will be demonstrating martial arts and sports. Among them will be European and world champions, and holders of high technical degrees in their disciplines.

“As well as the original swords, there will also be artefacts in excellent condition in the exhibition.  Experts with years of experience in the field will give talks about martial arts and the history of the sword in Japan” the event organizers explain the interesting event.

Accompanying programme

Several workshops are prepared both for children and adults. Eventgoers can look forward to a homemade Japanese pastry shop and Japanese tea tasting. Visitors will also get acquainted with the principles of calligraphy and origami with the option to try do everything themself.

100th anniversary

This year, Katana Matsuri will take place as part of the ‘100th Anniversary of the Relations between Japan and the Czech Republic’ organized by the Embassy of Japan in the Czech Republic.
