During the autumn of 1918, the end of the First World War conflict that had irreversibly changed the face of Europe and touched the fate of millions of people was approaching. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy, in which in addition to the Czechs many other of Central-Eastern Europe nations lived, was about to collapse and opportunity for independence presented itself to the national entities. The Czechs proclaimed an independent state on 28 October, and the Slovaks joined two days later. The first Czechoslovak president was Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. In 1993, Czechoslovakia was divided into two separate states - the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic.
