The "100 Years - 534 Artists" Exhibition will present unreleased stamps from famous authors

The Postal Museum was founded on December 18, 1918 and coincidentally on the same day as the first Czechoslovak stamps seen the light of the world. Do you know what form they were? It depicts the Prague Castle, behind which the sun is emerging as a symbol of the birth of a new state, despite the fact that it does not really go beyond the Castle. Stamps designed by Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha were selected from more than ten designs.

Since then, 4042 stamps have been unveiled, of which 3029 are Czechoslovak and 1013 are Czech.

Unique Collection

During its 100th anniversary, the Postal Museum managed to build a highly prized collection of tens of thousands of unique gra

phic works. It contains original drawing designs, including variants, sketches and unrealized designs, engraving line drawings and first day envelope designs, postcards, or occasional stamps.

Traditional and Famous Authors

Who designed the art for the stamps? Renowned authors and painters, to date there are 534. At the exhibition, which includes 181 original artworks, you can enjoy examples from traditional artists such as Alfons Mucha, Max Svabinsky, Karel Svolinsky or Oldrich Kulhánek.

The postal jewels are also from other authors of eminent names, such as the Czech academic painter, graphic artist and illustrator who is among the collectors one of the most sought after Czech artists of modern art - Václav Špála - or one of the founders of modern abstract painting - František Kupka. There is also another Czech painter, graphic artist, book illustrator and writer Josef Čapek and many others who you did not think would be part of the stamps.
