This year's Febiofest will be packed with great movies

Febiofest, Prague's biggest film festival, is about to start in the Czech capital. This year's 26th annual festival will once again please the hearts and souls of all visitors with a selection of the most interesting films from the Czech Republic and abroad. In just over a quarter of a century, the festival has become a true landmark of Prague's cultural scene.

“We want to make as wide an audience as possible interested in quality filmmaking” Fero Fenič, the festival’s founder, said before the very first show. At the time, in December 1993, the screenings took place on three screens around ‘Václavské náměstí’ (Wenceslas Square), and approximately 6,000 visitors attended the festival in the first year. Today, Febiofest is one of the most well-known film festivals in the Czech Republic and also one of the most important, after, of course, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Over 60,000 cinemagoers come to Febiofest every year.

Over 150 movies and interesting guests

This year, the festival will keep up its standard of offering many interesting films. In sixteen sections, more than 150 films will be introduced, from new feature-films and documentaries to digitized versions of classic movies. The festival has something to offer to everyone, plus, interesting guests will be present. The first will be the American actor Peter Fonda, who will open the festival. The 76-year-old holder of two Golden Globes will also collect the Kristián Award for Contribution to World Cinematography in Prague. Who wouldn't know the iconic ‘Easy Rider’ and ‘Ulee's Gold’, two films which garnered Academy Award nominations for Fonda? Both of these films will be screened at the festival, along with the film ‘Outlaw Blues’ which also stars this member of the famous Fonda family – Peter’s father was Henry Fonda, and his sister is Jane Fonda.

Legendary actor

There are countless interesting films on the programme, including ‘The Old Man & the Gun’, the latest Robert Redford film. In this biographical drama based on true events, the iconic actor will play the role of a thief who is an expert in prison breaks, which earned him the admiration of the general public.

It is worth noting that this was supposed to be Redford's last film. The actor himself announced that he would retire from acting once the film was finished. However, from his latest comments it seems that he might have changed his mind, which would be great news for his fans.

Directorial debut feature and Garrel's novelty

The film ‘Blind Spot’, classed in the festival’s section ‘Northern Lights’, is also deserving of much attention. This one-shot feature film is the directorial debut by the famous Swedish actress, Tuva Novotny, who has Czech roots. It is an emotional film that explores the theme of teenage depression.

French director and actor Louis Garrel will also introduce his new film in the Czech metropolis. In his second feature film - the romantic comedy ‘A Faithful Man’ (L’homme fidèle) – Garrel plays the lead role of a man who has to choose between two women.

Academy Award–winning films

There are also films on Febiofest’s programme which won Academy Awards this year. ‘Free Solo’ by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi is a documentary which follows the journey of Alex Honnold, the first person in history to climb the nine-hundred-metre wall of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley alone and with no safety gear.

The second Academy Award-winning film that Febiofest offers this year is ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’. This love story takes viewers to Harlem in the early 1970s. Regina King gives an amazing performance and was presented with the award for the best supporting actress at the 91st Academy Awards.

We could go on and on. There is no doubt that this year's Febiofest has a lot to offer. Just browse through the programme, choose your films and enjoy the festival.
