Zlíchov Open Day

The Zlíchov Depot is reopening after the winter break.

On the 13th of April 2019, you can come to see historic trains and more. The ‘Zlíchovská výtopna’ (Zlíchov Depot) was built in the 19th century on the premises of Prague Smíchov Railway Station. Depots - buildings used to prepare steam locomotives for service –were once a part of larger railway stations. This one, however, served not only as a service station for carriages, but even as Tatra Smíchov’s development workshop. It is from here that the legendaryT3 tram set out for the first time.

The ‘Výtopna Zlíchov’ union

The depot stopped serving its purpose after 1989. Since 1999, a club of the same name, ‘Výtopna Zlíchov’, has managed to renovate and put back into operation several steam engines and diesel locomotives, personal and goods carriages, trucks and the unique steam roller, ‘Mamut’.

From cottage to exhibition

On Saturday, the 13th of April 2019, an Open Day will be held in the former depot. There will be many locomotives to see, such as steam engines, newer diesel locomotives, the steam roller ‘ČKD Mamut’ and the Ringhoffer Krasin tram. This tram carriage has a turbulent history. It was made in 1932 in The Ringhoffer factory in Prague – Smíchov, its number is 1389, and it is the only one of this kind that has survived to the present day. It was registered on the 6th of April 1944 in the Motol Depot. From the 5th of March 1959, it was registered in the Žižkov Depot and in 1969 it was put out of service. Before it was acquired by the ‘Výtopna Zlíchov’ club in 2017, it served as the base of a holiday cottage outside Prague. When the cottage was about to be demolished, the owners decided to donate the tram carriage to the museum. Since the Prague Public Transport Museum was not interested in the tram carriage, the ‘Výtopna Zlíchov’ club took ownership of it and reconstructed it back to its original glory. Today, it is a part of their collection.

‘Karkulka’ and ‘Marcelka’

Currently, they are working hard to repair some other gems at Zlíchov - the diesel locomotive T444.0078 (‘Karkulka’) and steam engine 313.901 (‘Marcelka’). In the future, you will be able to even see these refurbished beauties in the Zlíchov Depot, and eventually even on the railway track.

On the 13th of April, there will also be steam train shuttle rides with the locomotive 213.902, called ‘BéeSka’, in the direction of Zličín and back, on the beautiful ‘Prague Semmering’ route.
