Changes to The Prague Planetarium

Štefánikova hvězdárna (The Štefánik Observatory), Planetárium Praha (The Prague Planetarium) and Hvězdárna Ďáblice (The Ďáblice Observatory) have a new platform. They no longer need to be individually searched for under long and confusing names, as was the case in the past. Now, you can find them under one name: Planetum, with a single webpage and a unified presentation.

The goal of this innovation is a complete modernisation and to get closer to adults and children alike. It aims to popularise the observatories and the Planetarium as modern entertainment institutions with a lot to offer not only to schools, but also as popular destinations for family trips. The Prague observatories and the Planetarium are superbly equipped and unique on a national and international level. They offer interesting programs. Unfortunately, they were not very well known to the public. The new platform hopes to popularise these amenities.

Wide choice

The new joint platform Planetum offers an exhaustive information about all three facilities under a single title: observation of planets, stars, sun, moon and space objects; exhibitions; guided tours; movies; and interaction with the universe through a variety of simulators that allow the visitors to fully live the experience of an astronaut or an astronomer. Up to now, people used to mix up the observatories and the planetarium with each other. Since they became one on the joint platform, it should not be confusing anymore.

Plans for the future

"We want to become one of the best space centres in Europe," Planetum PR manager Eva Šimoňaková says. To achieve this goal, she wants to use the advantages of the individual centres. For example, the planetarium in Stromovka has the largest projection screen in the Czech Republic and one of the largest in Europe, which should now be used significantly more. In the future, space-themed movies will be screened here, for both adults and children.

Planetum on Christmas

Over the Christmas season, Štefánikova hvězdárna presents program Mystérium hvězdy betlémské (the Bethlehem Star Mystery), which explains the phenomenon of the comet that pointed to the three wise men the way to Bethlehem, to the new-born Jesus. The famous story is explored from biblical, historical and, of course, astronomical points of view.
