Prague Proms welcomes exceptional artists
On the 18th of May 2019, the next annual Prague Proms International Festival, a prominent summer gala by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, will start. Visitors will enjoy great concerts of classical, film and jazz music. The annual participation of top foreign artists is evidence that this is a prestigious project. Celebrities such as opera singer Edita Gruber, conductor Marcello Rota, Swedish trumpeter Lasse Lingren, saxophonist Brandford Marsalise and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra - one of the best active big bands in the world, phenomenal soprano Anna Netrebko, and the big band Buddy Roche all accepted the invitation, along with many other big-name artists.
The Hollywood Night concerts are among the most attractive concerts for audiences. Music enthusiasts, not only from the Czech Republic, but also from abroad, come to see them every year.
The festival launches with great jazz
What surprises will the festival have for its visitors this year? The opening itself promises to be another great event. The festival will be opened by the orchestra Thomas Gansch Big Band, on the 18th of May. They will introduce the audiences to ‘Tribute to Thad Jones & Mel Lewis’, dedicated to the memory of the phenomenal jazz trumpeter Thad Jones (1923 - 1986) and his fellow musician Mel Lewis (1929 - 1990). Jones and Lewis, who regularly performed with their band in the renowned New York Club Village Vanguard, were very important figures in the jazz world, as they created a completely new blues sound. "I do not know of any greater pleasure than playing Thad Jones and Mel Lewis with the big band made up of friends,” Thomas Gansch says.
For classics lovers
Classical music will be represented at the festival by one of the world's most sought-after tenors of our time - Mexican Ramón Vargas, who will visit the Czech metropolis after fourteen years! Classic fans can also look forward to the Tchaikovsky Gala. Festival goers will have the opportunity to listen to the famous 19th century composer’s Symphony No. 6, Pathetic, which Tchaikovsky considered to be his most important and most personal work, and Rococo Variations for Cello and Orchestra, which will be performed by the great Czech cellist Václav Petr.
Jazz and the final Hollywood Night
In addition to Thomas Gansch’s big band, Prague Proms jazz concerts will also offer other artists, such as New York's Hot Sardines, which will please jazz lovers. The Loop Jazz Orchestra of Jan Hasenöhrl is another jazz performance on the programme. The exceptional American conductor and composer Carl Davis will conclude the festival with movie melodies. This year's Hollywood Night will remind the audience of titles such as the Oscar-winning film ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’, a film from the 1970s ‘For a Cop’s Hide’, Midsomer Murders and ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game. Of Shadows’, and more famous films.
