What’s on for ‘čarodějnice’ (Saint Walpurgis Night) in Prague this year?

Originating from a pagan feast, 'pálení čarodějnic' or 'čarodějnice' for short, a Czech version of Saint Walpurgis Night, has become a folk custom and tradition.

 It came from rural to urban areas and it has become an entertaining social event. Join this year’s festivities! Here are some tips on where to go and what to do, but ‘čarodějnice’ will be celebrated all around the Czech capital.

There will also be competitions for the best witch costumes, and various other games and music performances.

 

Saint Walpurgis Night in Žluté Lázně

Where will ‘čarodějnice’ take place in Prague? At Žluté lázně, a leisure centre and beach on the bank of the Vltava, ‘čarodějnice’ will be celebrated, along with the beginning of the new season, on the 30th of April. As usual, there will be a varied programme for the whole family. The festivities will kick off at 2:00pm on a large stage on the main green. In the early evening, you can listen to a live concert by the famous Czech folk and country singer František Nedvěd, among other things.

The programme for little ones will also commence at 2pm. The children’s programme will include activities such as a magic witch show with Mazec Theatre. Kids can also take part in art workshops, games, competitions, and there will also be funfair amusements and a witch's fair. Admission is CZK 50, and children up to 100 cm go free.

 

Saint Walpurgis Night in Břevnov

On the 30th of April at 2pm, the 18th annual ‘Jarní břevnovské trhy’ Břevnov Spring Markets will take place at the Břevnov Monastery in Prague 6, in conjunction with ‘pálení čarodějnic’. Get ready for lots of great food and drink! In addition to the rich offerings at the market, good beer will be served and you can sit in a large tent. Don’t miss the traditional roasting of ‘špekáčky’, the authentic Czech sausages. Children will also enjoy themselves at the bouncy castle and inflatable slide. Face painting will also be available in Břevnov. Admission is free.

 

Saint Walpurgis Night in Ladronka

Probably the biggest celebration of ‘čarodějnice’ will also take place at 2pm on the 30th of April in Ladronka in Prague 6, where the varied programme attracts many visitors. The presenter is Petra Černocká, who is renowned for her part as the young witch Saxana in the famous Czech movie, ‘Dívka na koštěti’ (1982). The magical afternoon will have 3 locations - Main Stage, Theatre Zone and Magic Zone. So, there will be plenty to choose from. Admission is free.
